My holiday baking plans have hit a setback: I don’t have the right size pan to make a buche de Noel. However, I strongly suspect that my parents do, and if I make it at my parents’ house then the resulting cake can crown Christmas dinner with my brother and his girlfriend… Or else it will fail spectacularly and I will be forced to make brownies, which I believe everyone will recognize as an acceptable plan B.

In the meantime, I’ve baked a batch of snickerdoodles (are snickerdoodles a holiday cookie? Possibly an honorary variety? I feel anything with that much cinnamon has holiday affinities) and I am now planning a Mount Vernon gingerbread, which is gingerbread as a soft and delicious cake, possibly with lemon sauce? or hot rum sauce? or maybe caramel-pear? The cookbooks offer many possibilities and they all sound delicious.

I may be forced to make multiple batches of gingerbread. There is clearly no other solution.

But first I need to make gluten-free brownies for the library Christmas party. Onwards and upwards!

The BURDEN of multiple batches of gingerbread! Sometimes sacrifices must be made, and when those times arise, it is good to know that you are willing to step into the breach. Mmmmmmmm, gingerbread.

PS I've definitely seen snickerdoodles presented as Christmas cookies!

I've also seen snickerdoodles presented as holiday cookies! It sounds like your existing plan is a pretty solid. I hope, if you do try to make a buche de Noel, that it goes well for you! (And if you don't, honestly, has anyone ever complained about brownies?)

Crossing fingers all your baking endeavors turn out like you want!

I am immensely proud of having won a blue ribbon at a county fair for my snickerdoodles when I was six.

(I must find a gluten-free snickerdoodles recipe. It has been too long since I ate some.)

Mount Vernon gingerbread sounds delicious. I was planning to make a cranberry-apple-walnut cake but now I'm torn.

This post has tickled my mostly dormant baking itch. I've usually gotten deep into the cookie-making by now in the holiday season, but this year has thrown a few roadblocks in my way. Anyway, I vote that snickerdoodles are absolutely a Holiday Cookie(tm), and definitely are a favorite around the holidays in my family at least! Best of luck with the buche de noel...haven't tried my luck with one of those, but it's on my baking bucket list for sure.
