Twilight Zone: The Masks
Nov. 3rd, 2018 06:32 pmWe wanted something a bit spooky for Halloween, so we decided to watch an episode of Twilight Zone: specifically, Ida Lupino’s “The Masks,” the only episode of Twilight Zone directed by a woman. I haven’t seen a lot of Twilight Zone but this seems like pretty classic Twilight Zone: no one’s going to watch it and yell “Ida Lupino got girl cooties on Twilight Zone!”
I’ve found this to be pretty true overall. If you watch a lot of films directed by women, you’ll notice some overall trends that distinguish them from male-directed films: there tend to be more female characters, and these characters tend to have more complex characterizations than in movies directed by men. But on a movie-by-movie level, you often can’t tell.
