Bruschetta!
Jul. 7th, 2009 07:14 amYesterday, unable to stand another day at the cafeteria (it's not the food, it's the day after day eating with a table full of people I don't know that well), I went to Beloit's fancy restaurant down by the river.
I wasn't expecting too much - small town fancy restaurant, you know? - but it was FANTASTIC.

Bruschetta! Fresh bread with fresh tomatoes, thinly sliced and broiled so the edges were sweet, fresh buffalo mozzarella (I think buffalo mozzarella means it's made from buffalo milk? Whatever. Soft melted cheese, just a little resistance when you bite in, sublime delicate flavor), with olive oil and basil sprinkled on top, and balsamic vinegar criss-crossing the top.
I don't know what they did with the vinegar - I'm not usually a great fan of vinegar - but they must have cooked it down and concentrated it, because this was thick and sweet and mouth-puckering all at the time, and by the end I was dabbing the bread into the decorative criss-crosses to get more.
All this, on an outside deck alongside a river with a gentle breeze. Wonderful evening.

Date: 2009-07-08 03:36 am (UTC)I'm wary of things described as buffalo, what with the totally non-buffalo nature of buffalo wings, but I'm glad to know the mozzarella is genuinely buffalo-related.
