The Heartland Film Festival is over, and I am bereft. No more movie listings to peruse! No more lengthy spreadsheets laying out showtimes so I can fit as many movies as possible into my schedule! No more agonizing over which of two movies to go see when they’re showing at the same time!

And no more movies to see, of course. The excitement is all over. It’s like the morning after the big ball.

This is not to say that I liked all the movies I saw. In fact, they were pretty evenly divided between movies I really liked and movies I really didn’t, which seems pretty fair given that I selected the movies based on a paragraph-long synopsis and a single screenshot. But it’s sort of thrilling to go in with so little information: whatever you get is a surprise, sometimes a delightful one and sometimes not, but either way it’s exciting.

Plus there was one day that I managed to see three films. That was a pretty handsome feat of scheduling.

One thing I would do differently next year is to make a greater effort to recruit people to come with me. Usually I enjoy going to movies on my own, but usually I can go to the internet afterward and there’s someone who has seen it too and wants to talk about it, and if there’s no one then there are at least other people’s reviews to read…

But a lot of the movies at the Heartland Film Festival don’t even have a Rotten Tomatoes page, and because they’re still on the festival circuit, very few people have seen them. I have no one to discuss them with! So you can see why it would be a good idea to line up a film festival buddy next year, at least for some of the movies.
