I would say it's a conspiracy but that would imply that people are doing this consciously and honestly I think its even more insidious than that: the impulse to ignore/erase women's contributions (in fact, the contributions of everyone but white men) is so ingrained that it's remembering them that takes effort and erasure that is automatic.
