New Kindle!

The Briarley royalties that came through at the end of August were amply sufficient to pay for a new Kindle to replace the ones the purse thieves stole: indeed, a new Kindle Paperwhite and a beautiful new Kindle case from Etsy, with a lovely stained glass pattern.

The case hasn't arrived yet, but the Kindle got here on Friday, which was odd because I only paid for regular shipping, but possibly this is Amazon's way of trying to sucker me into Prime, by showing me how nice fast shipping is? Eh.

Anyway, the Kindle is here and I have been happily arranging my books! (asakiyume, I read The Secret of Saturday Cove. A letter is winging its way toward you as we speak.) And also less happily contemplating the fact that there seems to be no way to banish titles from the Kindle: you can take the file off the Kindle, but the title itself sticks around unless you delete the book entirely, in which case you can't get it back in case you do decide you want it again. It's so untidy.

Otherwise, I'm socking the rest of my royalties away for... well, I'm not sure yet. A hot air balloon ride is still on the table, if I can find someone who will go with me so I don't need to chat with the balloonist. Or maybe a trip? I've always wanted to go to France or Japan... but it might take quite a while to save up enough for either of those... so maybe it's better to start with the more modest hot air ballooning goal and work up from there as I put out more books and hopefully make more money.

It was fun. I could pretty much tell how it would all fall out by the time I was done reading the set-up chapters (will Sally learn to like her brother's friend Poke? Will Sally and Poke overcome their fears? WILL THEY FIND THE TREASURE? Well obviously yes), but it's well-done, and I particularly liked all the details about lobstering.

I often find that Amazon sends my things far more quickly than they say (and I almost never pay for any kind of shipping at all, I go for free slow shipping whenever possible); which makes me less rather than more likely to sign up for Prime.

As you say, you can't completely banish titles from the Kindle without deleting the actual books, but you can toggle to a view where you only see what has been downloaded onto the Kindle and not what's still in your cloud library - so that might be a solution for you. (I totally sympathize with wanting the view to be tidy.)

It's weird to me that Amazon ships just as fast if you don't select the expensive shipping or buy Prime. Like, this completely destroys my incentive to do either of those things, not that I would have done them anyway, but still.

My old Kindle would let you just delete things off the Kindle. I don't know why Amazon has gotten rid of that function.

You'd think people would be flinging themselves at a chance to go on a hot air balloon ride! But in fact this does not seem to be the irresistible draw that I had imagined.
