I think researchers often fail to realize that in specific environments, the pressure to make "nontraditional" choices can be just as strong as the pressure in other environments toward traditional ones. If everyone at University X is hooking up, then many people will find it hard to buck the expectation even if that's not really what they want.
And there's probably a cost-benefit analysis going on too, where people think basically, "Well in an ideal world this isn't what I would choose, but it's the best of the options available to me right now." So in a sense they do make that choice because they want to, but if they had other options they might choose those.
