I'm turning twenty-one in ten days, and I find myself in dire need of advice: what are the cocktails that I must, absolutely must, try? Mojito or mai-tai? Brandy alexander or sazerac? Margarita, martini, Manhattan? Piña colada?

Absinthe is illegal, and I'm not that fond of pineapples, so sazeracs and piña coladas are out. Otherwise the sky's the limit: what's your favorite cocktail?

Margaritas! They're my favourite by far. I like drinks that aren't sickeningly sweet, and good margaritas are light and tart and refreshing. And, of course, they have a kick!

I once had a homemade margarita: lick the salt out of your palm, kick back the shot, bite into a lime section. Man, that was good. It totally cleared out my sinuses. :)

Fun fact about tequila: sometimes brands put a worm in the bottle. (I'm thinking the expensive ones; no one would accept a worm in their booze unless they paid through the nose for it.) Eating it will make you really, really drunk.

Early congrats on the milestone!

Grog: rum + limeade (or limes and sugar)

Dark and Stormy: rum + ginger beer (which is non-alcoholic, and very strong and spicy)

Also, absinthe is legal in some parts of the country now.

Is it? I just can't keep up with these things.

Grog sounds delicious. I am in favor of limes.

Rum + limeade = delicious AND prevents scurvy

I was going to say a Scooby Snack, but I think those are sometimes made with pineapple juice, so maybe just a plain old Midori sour? ;D

Pineapples. They're taking over!

But even if it is a vehicle for the Pineapple apocalypse, it's hilarious that there's a drink called a Scooby Snack.

...well, I don't know how it is in the States...but there's absinthe and absinthe...meaning that there are derivatives of the drink that still carry the flavour but don't have the insanity-inducing alcohol levels illegal absinthe does. Or possibly it's all illegal in the US? I don't know.

My personal favourites (in no particular order): kamikaze, cosmopolitan, vodka sunrise and floradora.

Floradora! What a name. Why do cocktails have such awesome names?

Happy Birthday in advance!

A mojito is always nice, and a kir royale is delicious. Moscow mules are vodka, ginger beer and lime, dry and refreshing.

I don't think absinthe is illegal in the UK.

It's something to look out for when I'm in Britain next year, then.

Honestly, I don't think I would like absinthe; it's apparently so bitter that you have to dump sugar in it in order to drink it (unless you're Van Gogh, in which case you drink it straight from the bottle), and I'm not sure my tongue could handle that kind of intensity. It just annoys me that in the US I can't try it.

Forget cocktails. Cranberry juice and vodka is the only way to go.

I've always thought cranberry juice is too sugary, but maybe the vodka cuts down on the overwhelming sweetness?

And, in turn, the cranberry juice cuts down on the overwhelming ughh of vodka in a natural form.
