I wonder if the humorous take was sort of a spoonful-of-sugar-to-make-the-medicine-go-down - maybe many people in 1999 weren't quite ready for a serious, dramatic, tragic take on gay conversion camps. If you want a movie to get people thinking you've gotta get people in the theater, you know?
