Admittedly Vaughn's wife is presented as a dreadful prudish harpy so we're probably not supposed to take her word on the situation as gospel truth. But on the other hand none of the other characters seem to care at all - you'd think at least Mike would think something about his childhood friend Will Nakaisuki disappearing! even if that something was "good riddance, he tried to steal my plane" - so who knows what Edna Ferber thought she was saying.
I think I would remember magical utensils! And also I'm pretty sure I only ever read one Andre Norton book (I can't remember anymore which one). I didn't like it, so I never went on to any others.
