Yes, it really is. I think it can get uglier, faster, in a commune situation, especially if there's a belief that the leader has divine revelation, but really it can go wrong anywhere. I've seen online groups go wrong because the supposed mods couldn't stand up to a charismatic bully who thenceforth set the tone for the whole group.
