I'm going to England! I'm going to England! I'm going to study abroad at the University of York next fall! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

I may be going to Europe a couple of weeks early, to see Barcelona and Aix (one of my friends will be studying there) and possibly Arles, which is also in the south of France, where Van Gogh painted and lived with Gauguin and went insane.

Arles, peculiarly, has no Van Gogh museum. But it does apparently have a museum of Roman antiquities, although I'm not sure how helpful that would be given I don't read French.

So perhaps we will go to the Basque country instead of Arles. Or Paris; we could go to Paris. Although in the Basque country I would be able to speak to people, and also they have delicious fish dishes. Europe! Why is there so much awesome in Europe?

Ah, that's just fantastic, congrats!

I remember liking Arles when I went there (years and years ago) but if you haven't been to Paris then I don't know how you could go past it. The Pantheon is probably my favourite thing in all of France - so fascinating.

Either way, I'm sure you'll have a just marvellous time.

I'm thinking I may hit Paris on the way home. Instead of meeting my friend in Aix, we could spend a couple days in Paris before flying home together.

I think this is an excellent plan. I should talk to her about it.

I lives there! Well, I graduated from there a couple of years ago, and I'm still in the city. York is awesome.

Is there anything in York that I absolutely must go to while I'm there - restaurants et cetera?

And what did you study at the university? Which college did you live in?

I did English, and I lived in Alcuin. Alcuin and Wentworth are the modern colleges, though a lot of them have a modern block now thanks to the Hes East expansion. I liked Alcuin a lot (en suites!) but there's no community spirit in it; you get that in colleges like Goodricke and Langwith, which are dodgy sixties builds. I went to a Christmas dinner in Langwith cooked for 30 people on a hob, a microwave and a hob/microwave.

Betty's (tea shop) is worth a visit to say you've been. My favourite cafe is Piglet's, though York's not short on tea shops, coffee shops and cafes. Blue Bicycle is meant to be a very good restaurant, but it's incredibly expensive so I've not been myself. It's worth working your way round all the touristy things while you're here - the minster, the museums, jorvik, st william's college, the treasurer's house, the art gallery... If you're living on campus you count a a York resident, and you can get a York Card from the library that lets you into a lot of place free or cheap.

Cool - York's lovely! Make sure you do such things as the Jorvik while you're there...
