My first instinct in these cases is always to sympathize with the Melvilles, because I know what that feels like; but a little more thought always reminds me that I know what it is to be a Hawthorne, too. It's just that the experience tends to be less memorable from that side, because you feel ill at ease and perhaps faintly guilty rather than GREAT FLOODS OF FEELING.
And yeah, like most love advice, "be selfish; please yourself" can be easier said than done. In real life I feel like the line between being in love and really wanting to be in love (but not really feeling it) is not always as clear as it is in Moods, for instance. And of course once there are joint finances and years of shared life experience and children, everything gets exponentially more complicated.
