I've known this book existed for years, but this is the first description of it that's made it sound like something I wanted to read.

Woolson has so little faith in Anne (who, poor child, is not allowed to have opinions or faults or much emotion at all) that she seems to believe she can only sell her as a heroine if she constantly runs down every other woman in the story and also women in general.
