What I’ve Just Finished Reading

I’ve already posted about Gift from the Sea, and that was the last thing I finished.

What I’m Reading Now

I’ve almost finished Betsy in Spite of Herself. Betsy has gone to Milwaukee to visit her friend Tib, and I’ve found her voyage completely enchanting, starting with her train ride (the romance of train travel!) and extending to the intensely German city that Milwaukee was in the early 1900s. Two of Tib’s grandparents, who have lived in the US for decades - I think one was born in the US, in fact - still barely speak English, because Milwaukee was so German they didn’t need to learn English.

Also, Betsy and Tib take cake and coffee breaks every afternoon. More books should have cake and coffee breaks.

I’m also reading David McCullough’s !776, which has reminded me how appallingly little I know about the American Revolution. I still can’t believe they gave me a masters degree in American history, what were they thinking? In any case, Washington has just seized the heights of Dorchester (fun fact: a century later, Josephine Preston Peabody grew up in Dorchester, which was by then a suburb of Boston), and the British have abandoned Boston, taking quite a lot of grumpy Loyalists with them.

What I Plan to Read Next

The next Betsy-Tacy book is Betsy Was a Junior, so definitely that.

I went to the university library and borrowed a nice little haul: Hampton Sides’ Americana (I may end up reading his book about the World War II POWs simply in the name of completeness: I’ve read all his others), Peter Carlson’s Roughneck: The Life and Times of Big Jim Bridger (which I did get for completeness: it’s the third of Carlson’s three books), and Maud Hart Lovelace’s Emily of Deep Valley, which is set in the same town as the Betsy-Tacy books but focused on different characters.

Hiya! Just friended you because I love your Winter Soldier fic, and then found that you post about your reading - no way for me to resist that. :-)

I'm pretty quiet on LJ these days, but I do check my reading list, and I'd love to have you on it!

Ha, go for it! My reading tastes are pretty eclectic, so I'm not sure how relevant any of it will be to your interests, but if you enjoy reading posts there certainly are a lot of them here.
