The Pirate of Kindergarten returned to the mending room in a sorry state. I suspect that some child took exception to its complete lack of pirates, even as I did, and trounced it in a rage.
We had another repeat offender today: Dress-Up Mess-Up, which is one of the Crafty Chloe series, about a little girl named Chloe who - wait for it - loves to craft things. It's one of those picture books where the main character hits on a solution that it sweet but that I don't think would actually work. Young Chloe has promised each of her two best friends that she's going to dress up as a character from a favorite book that they share - either Dracula or a flower fairy. What can she do? Why, combine the two costumes into one franken-flower-Dracula-fairy, of course!
Frankly I think both her best friends would end up annoyed with her. But you promised, Chloe! You promised, and this isn't at all what you promised to do! Sometimes if you try to please everyone you end up pleasing no one.
My favorite find today, however, was Nikki McClure's How to Be a Cat, a very simple book - just a list of verbs, really: explore, purr, sleep, etc. - with gorgeous black and white silhouette illustrations, plain and bold and striking, and one splotch of color in a little blue butterfly that flutters around the pages.
