I think I read The White Stag for my Newbery project a couple years ago. IIRC I didn't like it that much (I just don't seem to appreciate epics), but that is a gorgeous cover.
Have you ever read Rosemary Sutcliff's The Shining Company? It also features a white stag. (I'm not sure it bears any other similarity to anything, I just made an associative leap.)
