What I’ve Just Finished Reading
Lots of books! Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and L. M. Montgomery’s Pat of Silver Bush, both of which I wrote about last week, and also Charles Finch’s latest Charles Lenox mystery, Home by Nightfall - which has one of the most beautiful covers in a series of books with gorgeous covers - and an enthralling story to match; I read the whole thing in almost one go on Monday.
It’s enthralling but not actually very plotty, if that makes sense. We’re far enough into the series now that we know all the characters, and Finch has a good time checking in with all of them, and Lenox and his brother spend a good deal of time tromping around the frosty autumn countryside; it’s actually quite a leisurely book, for all that there’s a murder halfway through it. There’s a tinge of melancholy to it, but it’s not at all depressing. Contemplative, maybe, would be the word.
Also, Finch has at last managed to curb his love of info-dumping, which is probably a triumph for his craft but is nonetheless a little sad. I rather enjoyed his tendency to pause and be all “Let me talk about the history of the Royal Mint!”
What I’m Reading Now
I've just started Naomi Novik's Uprooted.
What I Plan to Read Next
I’m beginning to believe that the library will never get Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On, just to spite me. I’ve lingered at number three on the holds list for weeks!
