Peanut butter Oreos have returned! The proper kind, I mean, not the Reeses peanut butter Oreos with which they have been replaced for OVER A YEAR, which are not nearly as good because they are much too sweet.
I went to the supermarket to buy more peanut butter Oreos to eat while watching the premiere of Supergirl tonight, but they were GONE! Apparently everyone else also recognizes the vast superiority of regular peanut butter Oreos and fell on them with cries of glee, because they were all sold out. SADNESS.
In any case! It's Monday again, which means it's picture book day, and I saw a lot of good picture books today. I think my favorite was Wendy Kesselman's Sand in My Shoes, which is about a girl leaving behind the beach after a summer in a beach house and thinking wistfully back on her good times there. The watercolor illustrations totally charmed me: the perfect medium for paintings for a beach story.
Another beach book also caught my eye: Brian Lies Bats at the Beach (which Amazon informs me is merely one of series of books about bats doing unlikely but adorable things). This one is more purely fun, without the haunting undertone of wistfulness in Sand in My Shoes. I love all the little details in the illustrations, like the bats flying to the beach with their little picnic baskets, or the marshmallows with grasshopper legs that they roast over their beach fire.
Or just, you know, the existence of the beach fire. It's a very cozy book. Picture books generally have a high coziness ratio.
Case in point being Karma Wilson's Who Goes There?, which is about a mouse which is settling into its den in a tree for the winter...only to keep being interrupted by noises outside! Is it an owl? Is it a cat? Is it a bear??? Or is it a lady mouse, digging a home in the same tree, and perfectly ready to be wooed with cups of raspberry tea with honey?
(Spoilers, it's totally a lady mouse. She has been just as unnerved by his shouts of "WHO GOES THERE?" as he has been by the sound of her digging out her new home in the tree, so it's clearly a match made in heaven.)

Date: 2015-10-27 04:07 am (UTC)Did you know pumpkin spice Oreos are a thing? I saw some at the store while I was lamenting the tragic lack of peanut butter Oreos. I almost bought some to soothe my troubled soul, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.
