How did you start watching Torchwood? Why do you like it?
I actually got into Torchwood through the fanfic – the stories were just so interestingly weird that I thought the show must be pretty good.
…yeah, that didn’t quite work out. I can’t say that Torchwood is in any way high quality, but it’s strangely addictive, and I like the fact that anything – really, anything – is possible in Torchwoodland, even if the writers made shamefully poor use of that fact.
Also, I kept watching because I enjoyed writing Torchwood fanfic. There are so many problems with the show that it was easy to come up with story ideas.
And the entire cast is just so darn cute.
Do you have a favourite poem, or poet?
It’s hard to pick just one…I’m very fond of Billy Collins (this is a link to an informal critical write-up, with excerpts from his poems). This is one of my favorite poems of his, and this is a write-up of the time I went to one of his poetry readings (it contains a lot of squee, and also another of his poems that I love).
As for specific poems…I really love Edwin Arlington Robinson’s The Dark Hills. And there's also this poem by Emily Dickinson - no, I'm going to stop before I go crazy.
If there anything on a book cover (a quote, or review, or a picture) that automatically makes you want to read that book?
The name of an author I already like? No, that’s a cop-out – although a review from an author I respect will get me to look at the book.
I like covers that are clear and simple, but not simplistic. Crown Duel’s cover is possibly the best cover I’ve seen; I bought the book because of that cover, and I almost never buy books I haven’t read before.
I also think Twilight, whatever its many failings, has one of the best covers ever. Clear, striking, and mysterious.
What is your favourite cookie?
You do like hard questions. I would have to say the chocolate cookies I posted the recipe for are probably my favorite, although I’m also very fond of peanut-butter chocolate chip. I like oatmeal chocolate chip a lot too; I like the texture. Crunchy and sweet!
If you want to ask me more questions, or want to be asked questions, just comment.

Date: 2009-01-23 04:29 am (UTC)Otherwise...there's this Torchwood/lolcats crossover (http://sam-storyteller.livejournal.com/126227.html), which is fantastic.
Anything by
This one is actually Doctor Who, but that's like Torchwood, and anyway the story is awesome and makes total sense even if you haven't seen Doctor Who (I can say that with authority, as I haven't): Precious Little Space Dumplings of Love (http://community.livejournal.com/shaggydogstales/3576.html). This author also has a website full of lovely, lovely fic.
Other than that...I don't really keep a list of fics unless I absolutely love them, so I don't really have anything on hand. I hope that helps.
I watched the first season of Atlantis but lost track of the show after that; it reminds me of Torchwood, actually, in that both shows have so much potential for zaniness which gets squandered.
Although I did see part of an Atlantis episode where Sheppard and McKay were playing this computer game with competing civilizations, and then they went to a planet and found out their civilizations were real. That seemed promising but I had to leave for class. :(

Date: 2009-01-23 04:38 am (UTC)That is actually the first episode of SGA that I saw after reading a bunch of fic. I think it displays the dynamic of the team pretty well, which is really the interesting part of the series.

Date: 2009-01-23 05:50 pm (UTC)I've gotten the impression that the SGA team dynamic gets stronger in later seasons; in the first season it's kind of shaky. But I've also gotten the impression that SGA team dynamics are stronger and more interesting in fandom than they ever were in canon. Yes/no?

Date: 2009-01-23 08:58 pm (UTC)Yes and no. I mean, team is often the focus in fanon, and it's definitely there in canon, though usually glossed over. You know, for the "plot".

Date: 2009-01-24 02:56 pm (UTC)I would have been so much more willing to forgive if they had just let Jack be wrong. It would have fit better with the "darkness" they were shooting for, too.
Re "plot": oh Stargate, how after all these years can you still not understand that no one cares about plot?

Date: 2009-01-24 09:33 pm (UTC)From what I've read about the new Stargate show they're making, it sounds like they've started to catch on!

Date: 2009-01-22 11:45 pm (UTC)Torchwood - there are flashes of specialness, especially in the characters, but there are just such silly moments. I liked Suzie best, before they killed her. Again. And Rhys. The gender role-reversal between him and Gwen (in that she goes off and saves the world and tells him not to worry his pretty head about it all) is refreshing.
I really like that Billy Collins poem about the three blind mice, I like that something so beautiful can be created with so few words out of an everyday situation.
Peanut butter for the win :)

Date: 2009-01-23 05:29 pm (UTC)And I always felt bad for Rhys, because here he's sitting at home and Gwen's going off and saving the world and sleeping with Owen and having mad sexual tension with Jack (at her own wedding, too. The scene where they dance together, staring into each other's eyes, and Rhys is off to the side? Ouch.)
It is a very "feminine" position, and it sucks whoever's in it.
