30 Days of Fandom Meme: Day 3
Aug. 10th, 2015 06:45 pm3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?
I’m cutting this down to the fandoms where I’ve written more than one story, because otherwise this is going to take forever. It’s actually kind of a hard question to answer, because I’m torn between saying the POV characters - because those are generally the ones who are easiest for me to write - but sometimes I choose the POV characters I do so they become our eyes on the characters who are the ones I’m actually most interested in. Does that make sense? It changes from story to story.
1. Captain America/Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bucky.
2. Eagle of the Ninth. Probably evenly split between Cottia and Esca. I never felt that I got quite as good of a handle on Marcus’s voice.
3. Torchwood. Owen.
4. Frontier Wolf. Lucius, probably.
5. Downton Abbey. Sybil!
6. The Obernewtyn Chronicles. Elspeth Gordie
7. Les Miserables: Eponine, poor angsty girl.
8. American Girl Dolls. Felicity.
9. Vikings. Athelstan.
10. Pushing Daisies. Man, I don’t think I wrote any of them well enough to have a favorite. I suppose the Olive sections in the Pushing Daisies/Wonderfalls crossover I wrote were probably the strongest Pushing Daisies fic I ever managed.
11. Psych. Gus, probably. Lassiter always steals the show in his cameos, but I’m not sure I could write any longer scenes about him.
12. Protector of the Small/Tortall. I liked writing both Lerant and Kel. Oh, and Neal, because he’s such a meatball. And Yuki. And really everyone.
13. The Silver Branch. Cullen. The weirdness of Cullen is pretty much single-handedly responsible for my output in this fandom.
14. Hetalia. Russia.
15. Wonderfalls. Jaye. I kind of suspect that I actually am Jaye, or maybe a slightly better socialized version of her.
16. The Eagle. Esca. He’s such an angry, angsty little devil.
17. Fairy Tales and Related Fandoms. I don’t think think I can actually answer this question, as fairytales aren’t a fandom in the sense that the others are.
18. The Lost Prince. Marco Loristan, that glorious honorable meathead.
19. Code Name Verity. Julie. Oh, Julie.
20. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. Lydia. Actually this juxtaposition between CNV and LBD gives me an interesting though, because my fics for both have the same dynamic: the less-outgoing, perhaps more reflective character is the POV character, but the fic is really about their best friend. I find really outgoing people fascinating but I have trouble writing them from the inside out.
21. Blood Feud. I liked writing all three of them a lot, really, Jestyn and Anders and Alexia. I don’t know if I can choose.
22. Ella Enchanted. Areida, I think. She’s just so sweet.
23. The Borgias. Lucrezia was always my favorite in every possible way.

Date: 2015-08-11 01:00 am (UTC)I haven't read the book in about a million years, but I remember being outraged as a pretentious emo teen by her "glamorized" and "sanitized" portrayal in the musical (because canonically unattractive characters are IMPORTANT to me, damn it!)
(and also listening to "On My Own" approximately five thousand times in a row; consistency was not teen!me's strong point to say the least)

Date: 2015-08-13 01:22 am (UTC)I don't know what it says about me that outgoing people seem more alien and difficult to write than brainwashed traumatized supersoldiers.
But the other reason for the tight Steve POV in Reciprocity is to preserve the element of mystery. If Bucky got POV, especially in the early stories, I think readers would get impatient with Steve's difficulty understanding him: the readers get it, so why can't he? Never mind the readers would have privileged access to Bucky's thoughts and Steve wouldn't, so of course it would be easier for the reader to understand.
