Agent Carter
Jan. 7th, 2015 10:57 amAnyone else watching Agent Carter? I got together with a couple of friends to see the premiere yesterday, and we ate the better part of a bag of peanut butter Oreos and agreed that Peggy's hats were marvelous (I mean, her whole wardrobe was marvelous, but especially the hats) and Jarvis was terribly funny and we would like to meet his wife sometime.
1. Peggy getting all dolled up to go undercover, complete with American accent. OH MY.
2. I'm going to be a little disappointed if the suggestion that Howard is totally playing Peggy for nefarious purposes of his own. The man strikes me as a charming sleezeball, like Tony Stark with all the self-doubt taken out (and MCU Tony isn't overflowing with self-doubt in the first place!), and it wouldn't surprise me at all to find that he's less innocent than he claims.
On the other hand, whatever he's doing can't be bad enough that it would prevent them from founding SHIELD together, so we'll see how the show threads that needle.
3. The nice waitress at the automat who finds Peggy an apartment! I hope we see more of her and that Peggy enlists all her new apartment-building mates as partners in espionage, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. It would just be awesome for her to found SHIELD with a phalanx of already-trained spy girls at her back.
4. Is the guy with crutches going to be Peggy's love interest? (I need to learn all these character's names. I have had this problem in Marvel movies too, where they're like CHARACTER CHARACTER CHARACTER FIVE BILLION CHARACTERS and I'm like, I got Steve out of that. I hope the rest of you aren't important. But I'm fairly sure I never cottoned on to Bucky's name in The First Avenger, and they clearly did mean him to be important, so.)
IIRC in Winer Soldier we learn that she married a Howling Commando, so maybe not. (I would be fine with Peggy not having a love interest - there's clearly a lot of plot to get through and she's clearly still grieving - but I've also watched enough TV that I know the LOVE INTEREST HERE signs.)
5. We argued about whether or not Leviathan would turn out to be a branch of Hydra. My feeling is that, one, not all forces of evil can be Hydra, and two, it would be a real downer to watch Peggy defeat Hydra and found SHIELD, all the while knowing in the back of our minds that a mere seventy years later, not-really-defeated Hydra is going to rise again and wreck SHIELD. Much better to have a different evil organization that she can actually defeat.
However, I strongly suspect that Marvel and I have different ideas about how the forces of evil work, so they may in fact go for MASSIVE OVERARCHING CONSPIRACY RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST OF THE EVIL ON THIS EARTH.

I kinda love the depressing fics where Peggy and Howard found SHIELD and Alexander Pierce smilingly joins them and there's this feeling of dread as all their good deeds are undermined as fast as they can do them... so I kinda do hope Leviathan ties into Hydra in some incredibly downer way. /o\

Date: 2015-01-08 03:30 pm (UTC)If the show decided to play it as a tragedy, I could probably get behind SHIELD being undermined from the start. I'm just worried that they'll want a triumphant arc, and they'll try to create it by ignoring the tragic irony rather than giving her an evil organization she can actually triumph against.
Any recs for these depressing fics?

Date: 2015-01-09 12:13 pm (UTC)Given it's a limited series (fingers crossed for more seasons*) I think your solution of having Peggy take down a separate evil organisation is very sensible so they can end it on a hopeful note. But my heart will continue to futilely wish for the downer ending! :)
* My dream is that each season will do a different decade/era, so eventually we can see 50s Peggy, 60s Peggy, 70s Peggy...
I've only bookmarked one but it's one of my absolute favourite MCU stories - May Memory Restore by nimmieamee.

I've started reading that fic you recced. It's good, but so sad (even leaving aside the fact that Alexander Pierce is worming his way into SHIELD), with all the musing about them getting older and harder.

Or, perhaps, he really is an idealist (in the worst possible way, because he's chosen bad ideals), but the ideals he expresses are not the ones he really believes in. That makes it easy for him to keep those ideals looking sincere and shiny.
SO SAD.
