I have hot chocolate. This seems to be a reoccurring theme on my happiness list.

Also, I have the bestest brother in the world. After listening to my tortuous explanation of how I was going to the library and he should call me when he left the house because so I would know the house was empty so I wouldn't come back until later, because otherwise the demons would get me, he looks at me with great sympathy and asks, "Do you want me to hang around until Mom and Dad get back from the basketball game?"

I didn't make him do it, but it was nice that he offered.

***

As for the demons: this came about because I was reading a book about exorcisms, which is a terrible idea because I apparently got stuck at that stage of childhood where the supernatural is just PETRIFYING.

I can with equanimity read books about torture and mental illness and genocide and serial killers and other things that could potentially actually happen to me, but give me demons, ghosts, aliens, monsters from the black lagoon, and I'm a quivering mass of Jell-o who walks around the house flipping on lights and squeaking.

One nice thing about being at school: my room never really gets dark, because of all the ambient light from the street (a night light is just Not The Same), and also there's an always lit hallway just ten feet away, and there's always someone, somewhere, who's awake.

Still. I'm definitely Too Old for this.

Hot chocolate is definitely winter's only redeeming factor.

If it makes you feel any better, (1) the movie The Strangers had be terrified for weeks, (2) when I was about four, my mom told me that vampires were real, so (3) I've spent more than 20 years silently terrified of going into my attic after dark. It's never too late for the crazy to get you.

Oh, come on. Surely Christmas presents count as a redeeming factor too?

I don't know if you're talking about the current Strangers or the one from 1998, but both of them look pretty terrifying. My worst "thing that gave me nightmares" story: the cover of the movie Child's Play freaked me out terribly.

Also, attics are terrifying even in daylight. Not only are they likely to harbor ghouls, they also get invested with vermin.
