I've never read the original, but I've seen the title many times, and it took reading your fic to realize that the "silver branch" was an instrument! D'oh!

Also, so Cullen in the book really wears a tail attached to him?

He does wear a tail in the book! It is one of the many mysteries of Cullen.

IIRC the silver branch instrument comes from an Irish legend. It has bells on it, and reminds me obscurely of the Abhorsen's bells in Sabriel even though they have nothing else alike. It would be a very odd crossover.
