The Dark Hills
Edwin Arlington Robinson

Dark hills at evening in the west,
Where sunset hovers like a sound
Of golden horns that sang to rest
Old bones of warriors under ground,
Far now from all the bannered ways
Where flash the legions of the sun,
You fade - as if the last of days
Were fading, and all wars were done.

It's hard to explain why this poem appeals to me so much - every time I try, I simply end up quoting lines of us, as if repeating "the legions of the sun" will make you all see the sunset fading behind soft rolling hills turned black with shadow, and feel the melancholy of fading glory and passing time, which is what the poem gives to me.

The poem is one of the inspirations for the book I'm working on, about the Valley of the Sun and the paper bird that its last princess made to escape captivity. The warriors of the sun are gone, and their memory fades; but the last of days are not yet come, and the wars are not yet done.

It's romantic and sad, and moving--and unexpected. All of us contain such worlds, how wonderful it is that the world that is [livejournal.com profile] osprey_archer contains this, too.

Thanks for answering my prompt!

I enjoy how smoothly this poem shifts from view to view - it's very cinematic. There's something both peaceful and chilling about the last two lines, with their hints about the ultimate end of the world.
