Star Trek TOS
Dec. 3rd, 2013 12:04 amSPOCK. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE DEEP AND PURE LOVE THAT MY TWELVE-YEAR-OLD SELF HELD FOR SPOCK. I loved the fact that he was so calm and logical and competent and on top of things, but just occasionally let through a tiny shard of emotional expression - and even though he rarely expressed emotion, you could always tell he cared deeply about the Enterprise and its crew.
It’s probably a good thing that I had never heard of fanfic at the time, because I would have been just horrified at the idea of Spock being shipped with anyone, because he was so amazing that clearly no one could appreciate him properly. Particularly not Captain Kirk, that hussy. The man wooed a new woman every week! He could never understand the depth and purity of Spock.
That being said, there was an episode where Spock ended up wooing the enemy commander of something-or-other (this was over a decade ago, my memory is not very clear) and despite my general feeling that Spock was too good for the entire galaxy, I really enjoyed that.
I was also awfully fond of Chekhov, because he had a cool accent and I liked his hair. This may have impacted my later decision to study Russian. (Other influences: Patricia Polacco’s book about the goose who lays pysanki eggs, and my mother’s Time/Life Russian cookbook, which had pysanki eggs on the cover. I really like pysanki eggs, you guys.)
I watched it too long ago to actually remember the episode titles of anything, but yeah, I enjoyed that episode where Spock woos the enemy commander lady. Really any episode with a lot of Spock. Oh, and Tribbles! I didn’t see that one till I was in high school, when we watched clips of it in biology so the tribbles could demonstrate molecular diffusion or something like that.
