I went grocery shopping this morning. I have decided I should do all my grocery shopping on Saturday mornings henceforth, because it was a sample BONANZA.

They had sample hummus with pine nuts on top. Two kinds of sample cheese: Swiss, and cheddar with chipotle seasoning. And - and! - full-size sample cupcakes!!!

Chocolate, filled with caramel, with chocolate icing swirled with cream cheese. Om nom nom!

Also I finally saw Iron Man last night! I find most of the Marvel movies strangely underwhelming if very pretty, but nonetheless I feel that I have accomplished an important milestone in movie-watching. Perhaps we will watch Iron Man II and Avengers in time to see the second Thor in theaters!

Although I'm not holding my breath. It took us six months of concerted effort to see Iron Man.

Oh, god, Iron Man 2 is the WORST.

On the plus side, it does have Sam Rockwell and Don Cheadle, and more Leslie Bibb.

I voted we should just skip straight to Avengers, but noooo, my friends are completists and want to see everything.

Also I think Rick has mixed up what people told him about Iron Man 3 with Iron Man 2. Because he is under the impression that it is good.

It is really not good.

I didn't love Iron Man 3, but at least I didn't feel like I'd wasted 2 hours of my life.

There were a couple good Natasha moments, but that was about it. :-/

Maybe I can talk them into making it a drinking game... Although really, it can't be worse than the Iron Man anime that we accidentally saw in our quest to see Iron Man. That was pretty terrible.

I hope you watched The Incredible Hulk, then.

Yeah, no, nobody ever thought IM2 was good. Even the people who like Tony Stark.

Strangely, no one has insisted that we have to watch The Incredible Hulk. I think it might be something to do with the general unattractiveness of giant green ragemonsters.

You should watch it. Even though it's a different actor, it is a continuation of the same Bruce Banner storyline in Avengers. The character you see in Avengers will make a lot more sense with the context of that movie.

Also, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross is AMAZING. I am a fan, and this is my favorite role I've ever seen her play. Betty, as written in the script, is everything I could want in a female character: smart, brave, kind, kickass. But Liv just takes it over the top, and portrays her with such compassion.

I enjoyed Iron Man pretty well when I saw it, but I don't have the same excitement about superhero movies that so many other people seem to have. They're entertaining but I don't care deeply about the characters or the premise, you know?

I think perhaps you have to grow up with superhero comics to care deeply about the movies? Although maybe not, a lot of people seem to manage it without having seen the comics.

But it must help to have some engagement with the characters outside of the movies themselves, to give the characters more depth.

Yeah, that's true, a lot of the current fandom blowup is actually from newcomers to the genre. Which is great, I like new people! But I just don't seem to engage the same way with the superhero movies enough to want to explore them outside of the movie (e.g. through fic and whatnot).
