What I’ve Just Finished Reading

Philip Pullman’s Count Karlstein. I still cannot believe I didn’t read this during my Philip Pullman phase in my youth. But then I never read the Sally Lockhart books either… How are they? Should I give them a go?

What I’m Reading Now

I just started listening to Rudyard Kipling’s Kim. Julie references it so many times in Code Name Verity, I felt I had to give it a look.

What I’m Going to Read Next

I…am actually not sure! Finishing the Newbery project has cast my reading list adrift. But I have the audiobook of Elizabeth Wein’s Rose Under Fire on hold at the library, so whenever that comes in I’ll be all over it.

I really enjoyed the Sally Lockharts when I was about 16/17, but I can't swear to how they'd stand up as adult reading!

The library only has the first two books on CD (books on CD are my new passion), so I probably won't get around to them until next summer anyway. So many books, so little time!

Read the Sally Lockharts! I read them when I was thirteen, and it was the first series I'd read where characters whom I'd actually loved died in ways that were realistic - not symbolic or for the development of a main character - and that was a revelation. I will admit that the fourth book (The Tin Princess, in which Sally is an incidental character rather than the protagonist) is my favorite, but the whole thing is worth your time.

(Also, glad you liked my New Girl post!)

Oh, dear. I'm not very big on books with lots of character death. I'll have to wait till next summer to have time for it, anyway, as the library doesn't have the whole series on CD.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that characters were dying left and right - just that I was so used to reading books where the good guys always won or at least lived to fight another day, and this series showed me that wasn't always so.
