Finally, I have gotten disk 1 of season 4 of Community! And then I mainlined it all in one afternoon, because, you know, that's how I watch Community, even though I think this season is definitely shakier than earlier seasons.
1. Okay, the Dean's little crush on Jeff has gone from "kind of creepily cute" to "really just totally creepy." He's hacked into Jeff's email! He moved in next door to Jeff's apartment! He listens to Jeff's conversations through the wall, just in case he misses anything with the email! What's next? Is he going to plant bugs in Jeff's apartment? AAAAGH.
2. I'm hoping they're not going to keep pushing Annie's mostly unrequited love on Jeff, either. I would prefer to focus on other aspects of Annie's character, any other aspects of Annie's character, and if we never repeat the thing at the Inspector Spacetime convention where she playacts that she and Jeff are married, that would be great.
It would be greater still if that had never happened, but that ship has clearly sailed.
3. Speaking of the Inspector Spacetime convention: Oh my God, Britta, you deserve a boyfriend who does not put you at a far, far distant second behind his BFF. Why does she put up with it? She never had a problem telling Jeff off when he acted like a jackass.
And it makes Troy look like such a jackass, or at least very immature: like a high school kid who likes the sex parts of having a girlfriend, but doesn't quite see her as a person and would never put her or her feelings or her needs ahead of his friends. I hope at some point the show is going to call him on it, and he and Britta will either break up or he'll rethink his priorities.
4. WTF is up with this Chang plotline. I have been hoping that Chang would disappear basically since season 2, because they clearly have no idea what to do with him and therefore keep shoehorning him into unlikely plots that get in the way of interesting things happening to the characters that I (dare I say we? Does Chang have any fans?) actually care about.
I was hoping that Chang would honest to God have amnesia because AT LEAST THEN they would be forced to do something new with him, but nooooo, of course Jeff has to be right and Chang is totally faking it! We're going to get more of Chang's evil yet ultimately ineffectual scheming! WHY GOD WHY?
5. Okay, all this sounds like I hate this season, which is not so. It's still tremendously watchable - I did watch the first disk all in one go - and it's still screamingly funny at times - it's just that I've never been a big fan of intra-study-group romance and that seems to be becoming a focus this season.
And Chang. God, I wish he'd left at the end of season one.
