Mushrooms of the frozen north

As promised: mushrooms of the north woods! I took a truly alarming number of mushroom pictures, but I have picked

First, the classical mushroom, red with a white stem. No white spots on top, though.







And then a couple of cup-shaped yellow mushrooms, which turned out beautifully.

I know, right! Who knew mushrooms could be so beautiful? I looked at them and I was like, "It's like FLOWER FUNGI."

Speaking as someone who spent a fair amount of her youth in the Pacific Northwest mushroom hunting on the weekends with family, mushrooms are awesomely beautiful and varied, plus many of them are edible which makes an outing to find them super fun.

I love that scarlet mushroom! Just gorgeous. The second yellow is so enticing.

I basically spent half the camping trip tromping around to find mushrooms. Mind, they didn't exactly need hard looking - the yellow ones rather pop out at you - but it was so rewarding to find new ones, even if I didn't know which of them were edible.

The red one looks like russula emetica (and yes, that means exactly what you think) - the classic red with white spots is amanita muscaria. Dunno about the yellow one.

We went hiking on Sunday and collected maybe 15 pounds of delectable edible mushrooms. Last year was a bust as far as our favorite varieties so it was lovely to find a nice haul of them.

Fifteen pounds of mushrooms! That is a good haul.
