I seem to recall in the book that the orders had to be directly given to Ella - a Stop sign shouldn't have any affect because it's not a verbal direction and I think they had to be actually stated to her. That was what came straight to my mind anyway but it's been ages since I read the book - something I must fix, it's a brilliant book - I agree with everything said here. :)
