Thor and shooting stars
Apr. 14th, 2013 11:47 amDoctor Who last night. Emma and Caitlin and Rick are all devotees so I have been roped in. The Russian submarine captain looked like the platonic image of a British admiral.

Then we watched Thor, because I am finally catching up on superhero movies, hooray! I often feel this sense with the Marvel movies, both Thor and Captain America, that they're holding back. They know these are just the backstories for The Avengers, and so they feel a little thin and unfinished.
I suppose this might be like criticizing, say, The Fellowship of the Ring for ending on an inconclusive note, because it's obviously supposed to be part of a larger whole. But it felt different to me: Fellowship is the first part of a story, while Thor and Captain America are more like putting the pieces into place so the story can begin.
So it felt rather slight, but it was still fun: it's hard to go wrong with "And then the world whumped on Thor for a while." They did do a good job setting up "Thor is a hotheaded jerk," so it seemed like poetic justice when he kept getting hit by a car.
Although I did feel bad for him when Loki was all "Dad is dead! Mom doesn't want you back in Asgard! You're exiled forever! Teeheehee, I am such a good liar."
And then of course Odin wakes up from his coma just in time to catch Loki and Thor before they fall off the edge of Asgard, and he's all "Loki, your behavior has been a little embarrassing." Loki is like, "How dare you criticize my attempt to commit genocide against the frost giants! I'm just going to let go of this staff and fall into the darkness of space because my feelings are so hurt! EMOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo."
I think Odin needs to think about his parenting skills, because Thor and Loki are both hot messes.

And then we went out to the lake in hopes of seeing the aurora. Alas we were disappointed in this hope: but we saw stars, many stars, and flashes of meteors, and heard the frogs calling to each other in the muck.

And it'll totally be Thor."no subject
Date: 2013-04-14 06:23 pm (UTC)That would explain a lot. Maybe Marvel!Odin is really bored and therefore pits Loki and Thor against each other for his own entertainment.

Date: 2013-04-14 09:36 pm (UTC)Like, the supersmart scientist/love interest, badass warrior chick, and goddess queen mother from the comic books weren't enough, so the writers even made up a 4th female character to be the humorous reality check assistant to the scientist... which means this is a superhero movie that passes the Bechdel test. AMAZING.
It's also an important point to note that Thor took two characters who were white in the comics canon, and cast actors of color to portray them. There was kind of a big stink over the casting as Idris Elba as Heimdall, the gatekeeper, by some comics fans, so that raised an even bigger "stop being racist" backlash. Buuuut the one that slid under the radar, and is equally awesome, IMO, is casting Agent Sitwell with a Latino actor... making him the only Latino character in the Avengers cinematic universe.

Date: 2013-04-14 10:38 pm (UTC)So is Thor's Asian warrior companion (I didn't catch any of their names, except my friends informed me the warrior chick was Sif) Asian in the comics? Does he have a badass backstory about how he ended up joining forces with the Norse gods?

Date: 2013-04-14 10:49 pm (UTC)Yeah, I don't really know anything about Hogan from the comics, except that when I looked him up, he seemed to be a very Fu-Manchu Mongolian stereotype that the movie definitely moved away from.
