And one last straggler for the Five Things Meme. [livejournal.com profile] poeticknowledge asks: Top Five Favorite Songs?

This is changing all the time. But:

1. Tristan Prettyman’s “I Was Gonna Marry You.” I actually just got her CD, Cedar + Gold (yes, partly because it’s called Cedar + Gold, I am a sucker for pretty titles), and I like a lot of the songs on it - “Say Anything” is a soft wistful love song, and “When You Come Down” is an upbeat counterpoint.

But “I Was Gonna Marry You” is the first Tristan Prettyman song I heard, and the most redolent of story, which is always something I like.

2. Mumford and Sons’ “Little Lion Man,” partly on general principles that it is awesome, but also because I first heard it on the DC road trip, and road trip songs are automatically awesome. “Your grace is wasted in your face your boldness stands alone among the wreck.”

3. Colcannon’s “Last Letter Home,” which is this ballad sung from the point of view of a wounded Confederate soldier, without the succor of faith in his cause - “and I cannot help but wondering if the Rebels’ cause is right” - and dying, going by the title, and writing his last letter to his girl back home.

“And I dreamed of a rose in a Spanish garden...and I kissed you, as I placed it in your hair...if I’m ever on my feet again, I will run all the way to meet you there.”

I kind of think a fairy tale telling of this story is in order...

Given my interest in songs with stories, I should probably listen to more ballads.

4. “Come All Ye Faithful,” in most versions, although naturally there are some I don’t like. I <3 Christmas carols! I don’t care if everyone else in the world gets tired of them during Christmas time!

5. And finally, in case you have not yet realized that I have the musical taste of a base philistine: Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen, “Good Time.” Because it is so happy and joyful and HAPPY, and it never fails to make me want to spin my spinny chair in circles and jump up and down and dance.

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
