Blood Feud!!!

1. my favourite character and how i FEEEEL about them: I don't think I could pick one favorite. This is a book where I'm more interested in the reactions between characters than any one character per se.

2. the character i never expected to love this much: Anders, given he has like...five lines in the book.

3. the character everyone else loves that i don't: Thormod. Does everyone love Thormod? This meme is designed for larger fandoms.

4. the character i love that no one else does: I think everyone loves all the characters in this book?

5. my absolute most favourite pairing EVER: Does Alexia/Jestyn/Anders OTV count as a pairing? Um, it does now!

6. the immensely popular pairing that i just don't get/like: Jestyn/Thormod. I get it - Jestyn is totes in love with Thormod - but I don't find it very interesting.

7. the pairing i didn't even think of at first but have been convinced of (and how): Jestyn/Anders. I thought Anders' unfortunate deadness would get in the way of things, but you convinced me that it was totally okay to ignore the end.

8. my favourite non-romantic (/non-sexual) pairing/relationship is: Does Alexia and her gazelle count? I really like gazelles. In fact, I am in favor of Alexia and All the Animals.

9. the character i am most like is: Probably Alexia? Although if my gazelle got mauled by a leopard, I probably would not take it as calmly as she does.

10. the one thing i really really really really wish would happen (or had happened) in canon is: I wish Anders had lived through the book.

11. a random au idea i'd love to see in fic (and plan to write? wish someone else would write?): This is low-hanging fruit. Anders lives, obviously!

12: my personal headcanon includes: Alexia has a secret yearning to travel and see the world. That's why she's so concerned that Jestyn will leave: because if they changed places, she'd be gone in a heartbeat. (Not because she doesn't love him, but because WANDERLUST.)

13: my deep, dark fandom secret is: I don't think I have one, unless not being much with the Jestyn/Thormod counts, but that's hardly a secret.

and because thirteen could be an unlucky number to end on...
14: i am actually secretly the creator of this fandom! mwahahaha! and i am about to tell you something shocking/ awesome/ baffling/ behind-the-scenes-ish /unbelievable /spoilery /insert-adjective-of-choice-here: ...okay, I got nothing.

Ha, this is totally a meme for non-tiny fandoms!

I don't think everyone loves Thormod (I...don't feel like there's enough of him to love, despite writing the J/T). But it is the obvious pairing. Not, IMO, the most interesting.

you convinced me that it was totally okay to ignore the end.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Alexia has a secret yearning to travel and see the world. That's why she's so concerned that Jestyn will leave: because if they changed places, she'd be gone in a heartbeat. (Not because she doesn't love him, but because WANDERLUST.)

....oooooh. This is the best idea. I shall have to ponder it.

Tamora Pierce's Tortall universe! :)

1. my favourite character and how i FEEEEL about them: Kel. I LOVE KEL TIMES A MILLION. I love how she works so hard and is so honorable and stoic, and has this glimmering sense of humor beneath it, and such affection for all the people and animals around her, provided they act even remotely worthy of it.

In conclusion KEL IS AWESOME.

2. the character i never expected to love this much: Hmm. Probably Wyldon of Cavall? In First Test he's such a jerk, but he really grows as a character throughout PotS. Like Kel, he's got that adamantine honorable core.

3. the character everyone else loves that i don't: George (oh God please don't kill me). I do like George, but I think fandom tends to sweep his dark side under the rug. He cuts off people's ears, for goodness sake!

4. the character i love that no one else does: I think pretty much all Tortall characters have some kind of fanbase. But I'm awfully fond of Lerant, and I wish there was more fic about him.

5. my absolute most favourite pairing EVER: Probably Kel/Neal, because it includes my two most favorite Tortall characters ever (providing you can write it without making it all infidelity all the time).

6. the immensely popular pairing that i just don't get/like: Alanna/Jon, although I think that pairing is controversial among fans rather than immensely popular. Umm...not a big fan of Daine/Numair.

I also am so not a fan of Aly/Nawat, but I don't think that's actually popular.

7. the pairing i didn't even think of at first but have been convinced of (and how): Thayet/Buri. It never occurred to me, but [livejournal.com profile] carmarthen writes them really well.

8. my favourite non-romantic (/non-sexual) pairing/relationship is: Probably Wyldon and Kel. I love how they come to understand and respect each other.

9. the character i am most like is: Probably Dove? The quiet, bookish type.

10. the one thing i really really really really wish would happen (or had happened) in canon is: It would be awesome if Alex and Delia and Josiane had discernible motives in SotL. Because really, whyyyy are they conspiring with Roger?

11. a random au idea i'd love to see in fic (and plan to write? wish someone else would write?): I'd love to see an expansion of The Grim Gray Hills (http://archiveofourown.org/works/507817), which posits that Alex & Delia were working with Roger because of their Hill Country pride - a version that expands the political ramifications of that.

12: my personal headcanon includes: Lerant has kind of a crush on Raoul. And then later, he gets kind of a crush on Kel. He kind of hates it.

13: my deep, dark fandom secret is: I joked one time that Neal might have a crush on Lord Wyldon. And now I kind of want to write a fic about it.

and because thirteen could be an unlucky number to end on...

14: i am actually secretly the creator of this fandom! mwahahaha! and i am about to tell you something shocking/ awesome/ baffling/ behind-the-scenes-ish /unbelievable /spoilery /insert-adjective-of-choice-here: I have no idea!

*guiltily eyes WIP* Hey, maybe we can talk Ankhiale into writing more?

I don't understand the Fandom's obsession with wiping out George's dark side. HE'S INTERESTING BECAUSE OF THE DARK SIDE. That is why I love him so.

Um. I might be a George fangirl. But I love his conniving, violent, scary parts a whole lot.

Also - did you see Tamora Pierce won the Margaret Edwards Award for Outstanding Contribution to Children's Lit today? I totally had a OMGYAYYAYYAY moment.

Yes! And you'll be happy to know that while it's for her entire body of work, they cited Protector of the Small (And Song of the Lioness) as one of the major reasons. :D

I will try for dark!George fic! I used to write a lot, but Mastiff kind of destroyed my head canon somehow, and I fell away.

I keep waffling back and forth about whether to read the rest of the Beka books. I read the first one and liked it, but it seems to have this head-canon-cracking effect on people...

And now I've been poking through old bits & pieces. If you get asked to beta, you'll know why!

I'm much fonder of Mastiff than I am of Bloodhound even with the head-canon-cracking. I do love Beka as a character though. The expansion of the Lower City into something that actually makes sense as opposed to Alanna's surface view of it is what really draws me to the Beka books though. And Beka herself because she's a fantastic character.

Haha, that is the best name for the series!

1. my favourite character and how i FEEEEL about them: Ooooh, this is hard. But probably Sin! I love the way that she structures herself as a performer, trying to juggle all her different roles in life. She's got a tough life, but she makes it seems effortless from the outside.

2. the character i never expected to love this much: Sin, again. The third book gave her so much more depth and interest than was apparent in the first two.

3. the character everyone else loves that i don't: Nick. :( He just seems like such a jerk to me.

4. the character i love that no one else does: Is there a strong hate contingent toward any of the Demon's Noun characters?

5. my absolute most favourite pairing EVER: Probably Mae/Sin. I got some heavy girlcrush vibes off them in the second book. Although I also like Alan/Sin. (Possibly I just like Sin with everyone?)

6. the immensely popular pairing that i just don't get/like: Jamie/Seb. Seb is such a jerk to Jamie! And then he's all pathetic! Neither of these things seem attractive to me.

7. the pairing i didn't even think of at first but have been convinced of (and how): Jamie/Nick, oddly enough: I wouldn't buy it in the abstract but I've seen some fics that made it work. Nick is nice to Jamie, which he isn't to a lot of people.

8. my favourite non-romantic (/non-sexual) pairing/relationship is: Probably Mae and Jamie. Their sibling relationship is so sweet, and they do such a nice job backing each other up.

9. the character i am most like is: I don't think I'm really like any of them, honestly.

10. the one thing i really really really really wish would happen (or had happened) in canon is: Mae and Sin teaming up to run the Goblin Market together, rather than fighting over it. Also perhaps Mae/Sin smooches.

11. a random au idea i'd love to see in fic (and plan to write? wish someone else would write?): See above, Mae and Sin team up to run to the Goblin Market.

12: my personal headcanon includes: Mae and Sin totally made out the night they danced together.

13: my deep, dark fandom secret is: I love these books, but I also frequently wanted to chuck them at the wall when I was reading them, because the characters frequently do such ridiculous things.

and because thirteen could be an unlucky number to end on...

14: i am actually secretly the creator of this fandom! mwahahaha! and i am about to tell you something shocking/ awesome/ baffling/ behind-the-scenes-ish /unbelievable /spoilery /insert-adjective-of-choice-here: The Goblin Market is REAL! Or something along those lines.

1. my favourite character and how i FEEEEL about them: Sybil Sybil Sybil!

2. the character i never expected to love this much: Probably Daisy (though I'm not fond of her storyline in season 2.) I love how she's always trying to do the right thing, but she keeps getting flummoxed by life. Putting soap in the soup for Mrs. Patmore! Oh, Daisy.

3. the character everyone else loves that i don't: I wouldn't say that everyone loves Thomas, but I find the fans that he has totally baffling, because I am pretty sure he's made of pure distilled evil. And it's not even evil with grandeur! It's petty evil!

4. the character i love that no one else does: Probably Daisy. I don't think anyone dislikes her, but she doesn't get a lot of fannish attention.

5. my absolute most favourite pairing EVER: In the old days this would have been Sybil/Branson, but season 2 rather soured me on him. Probably Sybil/Gwen, now. Although against my will I've become rather invested in Mary/Matthew.

6. the immensely popular pairing that i just don't get/like: Anna/Bates. I'm just so tired of watching him get smacked down by life.

7. the pairing i didn't even think of at first but have been convinced of (and how): Sybil/Gwen. By adorable fanart!

8. my favourite non-romantic (/non-sexual) pairing/relationship is: Mary and Carson. Their father-daughter kind of relationship is so sweet.

9. the character i am most like is: Probably Sybil. Hence my adoration.

10. the one thing i really really really really wish would happen (or had happened) in canon is: Um, I want them to unkill Sybil. RIGHT NOW.

11. a random au idea i'd love to see in fic (and plan to write? wish someone else would write?): See above UNKILLING SYBIL. And then she and Branson could go report on the Russian Revolution. It would be epic!

12: my personal headcanon includes: Sybil has a thing for Branson's chauffeur uniform. She finds this mortifying and against all her socialist values, but it just won't go away.

13: my deep, dark fandom secret is: I think Sybil's crush on Branson's uniform is plenty deep & dark.

How has no one asked me about this yet? It is baffling!

1. my favourite character and how i FEEEEL about them: COTTIA! I love that she is so fierce and angry and brave.

2. the character i never expected to love this much: Cottia, actually. She's sadly underutilized in the book.

3. the character everyone else loves that i don't: I've never quite understood the Claudius Hieronimianus love. I mean, nothing against him, but he's there for like two pages, and I can never remember how to spell his name.

4. the character i love that no one else does: Man, I think most of the Eot9 characters get at least a little love some time or another. I find Aunt Valaria fascinating, though: how did she go from being an Iceni girl to the proper Roman matron who tries to mold Cottia?

5. my absolute most favourite pairing EVER: Marcus/Esca/Cottia, either in OT3 or any combination. I refuse to pick just one! It is impossible!

6. the immensely popular pairing that i just don't get/like: I think the only immensely popular pairing is Esca/Marcus, and I love that, so...

7. the pairing i didn't even think of at first but have been convinced of (and how): Esca/Cottia/Marcus. The idea of an OT3 never crossed my mind, but it is clearly the solution to all their problems!

8. my favourite non-romantic (/non-sexual) pairing/relationship is: I like Esca/Cottia, but I also think Esca & Cottia friendship could be totally badass.

9. the character i am most like is: I would like to say Cottia, but I don't think I am, really.

10. the one thing i really really really really wish would happen (or had happened) in canon is: I wish Cottia and Marcus's relationship were better fleshed out. As it is, it seems like Marcus is marrying her so she doesn't have to stay in Calleva, which is kind of unfortunate.

11. a random au idea i'd love to see in fic (and plan to write? wish someone else would write?): I am always up for more wingfic! Or fox!Cottia fic!

12: my personal headcanon includes: I like to think that one of Cottia's ancestresses was the fox version of a selkie.

13: my deep, dark fandom secret is: I don't really have one for Eot9 book fandom. But if you've seen the movie - I have a really hard time seeing Esca and Marcus ending up with a healthy relationship ever. I also find Esca's about-face in the middle of the movie completely inexplicable.

and because thirteen could be an unlucky number to end on...

1. my favourite character and how i FEEEEL about them: Noooo I have to choose? Probably if I have to pick just one, it would be Veronica, because she has all these IDEALS but is also so practical, and I love her friendship with Sophie and sparring with Simon and and and everything about her is just so awesome.

2. the character i never expected to love this much: At the end of book 1, I was pretty anti-Simon, but the rest of the series rather turned him around for me.

3. the character everyone else loves that i don't: I don't think there are any characters I don't like.

4. the character i love that no one else does: Hmm. I also don't think there are any characters that Montmaray fandom (such as it is) largely loathes.

5. my absolute most favourite pairing EVER: Is Veronica/socialism a pairing? Or Veronica/AWESOME? I actually don't feel very shippy about this book.

6. the immensely popular pairing that i just don't get/like: This meme is really designed for larger fandoms, isn't it. Hmm. I want to like Sophie/Rupert, but I feel like the book needed to do some more work setting it up for it to really click for me.

7. the pairing i didn't even think of at first but have been convinced of (and how): Toby&Julia, in a non-romantic married sense. I thought that wouldn't work at all, but the book actually convinced me that they could make a sweet partnership together, never mind they're not in love.

8. my favourite non-romantic (/non-sexual) pairing/relationship is: Sophie and Veronica all the way! Although Julia & Toby are also cute. (I suppose technically they do have sex at least once, because they produce a child, but the main tenor of their relationship is still platonic.)

9. the character i am most like is: Sophie, I think.

10. the one thing i really really really really wish would happen (or had happened) in canon is: I wish the romances had more time to develop. I really want to be on board with Sophie/Rupert and Toby/Julia/Simon, but the book just didn't spend enough time on them - especially the latter, which just popped out of nowhere at the end.

I guess expecting a YA book to really develop its OT3 is unreasonable; the publishers might have a fit.

11. a random au idea i'd love to see in fic (and plan to write? wish someone else would write?): I don't really have AU ideas. But I would love to see a fic that fleshes out Sophie/Rupert or Toby/Julia/Simon so I could buy into them emotionally.

12: my personal headcanon includes: I kind of think Toby didn't tell Sophie the whole truth about what happened in France. I don't know what he was keeping back, but Julia said he seemed to feel guilty about something, and there didn't seem to be anything guilt-inducing in his story. (Maybe Toby Explains It All could be part of the Toby/Julia/Simon story!)

13: my deep, dark fandom secret is: I was a little disappointed with the third book. :(

and because thirteen could be an unlucky number to end on...

This meme is hilariously meant for larger fandoms. But the tiny ones is where it's at.

For me, the beauty of the OT3 is that people can read it either way. If you're open to the idea, then it's apparent. If you wouldn't consider it, then clearly the son has Simon's eyes because Simon's his cousin (I have talked to people who had that reading, and I tried not to shatter their bubble). Because it's really only confirmed in the epilogue, I fanwank it as something that slowly developed over the years - Simon always had a crush on Julia after all.

Sophie/Rupert works for me because best friends-turning-lovers is a trope I enjoy. But objectively I totally agree that it could have been fleshed out quite a bit more to make it work better.

Veronica/AWESOME is the best pairing with Veronica/Socialism as a close second.

1. my favourite character and how i FEEEEL about them: Oh, this is hard. I really like Lily, but I think in the end my heart is given to Nina, because she is so fragile and tries so hard in a system that is geared to hurt her, and eventually falls apart under it but nonetheless keeps going.

2. the character i never expected to love this much: Nina.

3. the character everyone else loves that i don't: Thomas. Actually, I don't think there's huge amounts of Thomas love, but I hate him with a fiery burning passion and cannot believe that people think he is even slightly correct in his diagnosis of Nina's malfunction. He's not telling Nina she's repressed because he has any insight into her soul: he's telling Nina she's repressed because he wants to bang her!

4. the character i love that no one else does: Nina's mother. I wouldn't say I love her, but I think that she, unlike Thomas, actually cares about Nina, even though she doesn't have any idea how to help her and actually hurts her in some of her attempts to help.

5. my absolute most favourite pairing EVER: Probably Nina/Lily, although I think Nina would need to do some serious recovering before that would even begin to be a good idea.

6. the immensely popular pairing that i just don't get/like: Again, I don't think Nina/Thomas is immensely popular...but I just don't get it. At all.

7. the pairing i didn't even think of at first but have been convinced of (and how): I don't think I have one.

8. my favourite non-romantic (/non-sexual) pairing/relationship is: I think Nina & Lily friendship is also pretty spectacular (and find it more convincing than Nina/Lily in some ways): Lily is so kind to Nina and so openly and honestly admiring of Nina's dancing, in a way that I think Nina really needs and rarely gets.

9. the character i am most like is: I kind of hope I'm not like any of them.

10. the one thing i really really really really wish would happen (or had happened) in canon is: I hope after Nina's breakdown during the ballet, she gets some kind of therapy. And gets the heck out of Thomas's corps de ballet.

11. a random au idea i'd love to see in fic (and plan to write? wish someone else would write?): I think an AU where Nina is not hallucinating (or not only hallucinating) but is actually a wereswan would be awesome.

12: my personal headcanon includes: Nina doesn't die at the end: it's another hallucination.

13: my deep, dark fandom secret is: I...don't think I have one?

and because thirteen could be an unlucky number to end on...

14: i am actually secretly the creator of this fandom! mwahahaha! and i am about to tell you something shocking/ awesome/ baffling/ behind-the-scenes-ish /unbelievable /spoilery /insert-adjective-of-choice-here: No idea.

I also really like the Nina/Lily pairing though I agree that Nina would have to do some serious recovery from her mental breakdown before considering it. I don't care for Thomas at all either! =/ And in some ways, I have to wonder if Nina's mother is mentally disturbed as well. What do you think?

I'd like to think that Nina's death was just another hallucination, but who knows? I like the ambiguity of the ending and I do wish that Nina would leave ballet for good or at least from the ballet company Thomas is in charge of. I think it would do her mental health worlds of good. <3

I think Nina's mother may very well have some mental disturbance, and definitely has some unhealthy thought/life patterns that she's sort of replicated in Nina. Their lives seem to be entirely wrapped up in the world of the ballet corps - I think it's implied that Nina's mother actually works there - and they don't have any social support but each other.

I feel the same and you bring up a good point when you say it's implied that Nina's mother actually works there -- I always thought she had just been in the same ballet corps as her daughter before she quit, but seeing her working there would make sense too. :) Interesting insight!
