It's snowing! Or rather, it has stopped snowing (whyyyyy did I not get up earlier to frolic in the falling snow?), but there is still snow on the ground on the roofs and even a little clinging to the trees.

I have a free drink at Starbucks. Possibly this afternoon I should take advantage of this, to celebrate the snow?

Also, it occurs to me that I should make a sort of intro post, as the friending meme has directed a small deluge of new friends my way.

Hello, new friends! Welcome to my parlor. I'm a twenty-four-year old grad student in history, and therefore post a good deal about the theory and practice of doing history and also the specific books I'm reading for class.

When I'm not inundated with reading for class, I read and post about YA novels, Tortall, Rosemary Sutcliff books, classics and occasionally random nonfiction books (I like natural history. Elephants for the win!). I'm also in the middle of a reread of the American Girl books, although that's on hold on account of the aforementioned reading for class.

Plus I write fic. Most of it is on the fic tag here, but it's most easily accessible at AO3. I would list the fandoms I write for, but basically it is ALL THE FANDOMS (with an emphasis on Rosemary Sutcliff right now. Also I'm writing fic about Felicity, the American Girl.)

Other things! I also post about real life (snow, recipes, traveling, photos...),random links that entertained me, movies (I just saw It's a Wonderful Life! Jimmy Stewart is probably my favorite Classic Hollywood actor - yes, edging out even Cary Grant), and TV, although usually I'm two years behind whatever is airing right now.

And I just got a pinterest, on which I foresee wasting a worrisome amount of time. I thought about have separate boards with different things, but I decided it's more inspiring to jumble it all together: All the Things.

Snow! I'm jealous - it only ever rains here. Drizzle, drizzle.

Aw. But the Pacific Northwest is beautiful, at least?

Almost all of our snow melted! :( But I did get hot chocolate while it lasted, so that was nice, at least.

Snoooooow! Have you been sledding on all this snow you have? We didn't get enough for that.

Not personally, but we definitely had enough snow that I could've, had I a sled. You can just about see people with sleds in this picture:

I read "I'm a twenty-four-year old grad student" and immediately thought, "with a mountain of student loans, living at home and preparing for a career. But to my mum, the only thing that matters is that I'm single."

Thank you for allowing me into your parlor. :')

Are there any particular books on elephants you recommend, and/or particular reasons you're interested in elephants? A current and ephemeral interest, a lifelong obsession?

This is the article that got me interested in elephants: Elephants hold vigil for human friend (http://grist.org/list/elephants-hold-vigil-for-human-friend/).

I don't have a lifelong interest in elephants per se so much as animal intelligence. Elephants are pretty brilliant: they recognize elephant bones when they see them (and will pick them up and gently arrange them), and they can communicate over long distances through ground vibrations by stomping their feet. You'd think the vibrations would get long in all the other things running on the ground, but I guess it's like how humans can hear someone shouting for them even on a busy street?

I think my favorite elephant book is Daphne Sheldrick's Love, Life, and Elephants, which is half memoir about her life in Africa, half elephant book.

Oh, that's something I didn't know I need this morning. Thank you!

A particular resonance and weight to elephant footsteps makes sense to me, although my reading in this area is obviously beyond shabby. :')
