Catching up on LBD
Jan. 22nd, 2013 11:25 pmCatching up on the Lizzie Bennet Diaries! Yes, I actually managed to fall behind on something that has a mere two five-minute episodes each week.
I'm still behind on Lydia's videos, which is odd given that she's my favorite. (I mean, I love them all, but if I had to pick, Lydia is my favorite. Although I like Mary awfully too. And of course Lizzie is hilarious...)
But possibly that's why I'm behind, because I have the feeling that she's busy imploding, which is hard to watch.
Thoughts:
Episode 80: Um, Darcy is kind of adorable in his hat and bowtie. /is shallow. Also, I love how we're seeing hints of a very (very) dry sense of humor here: I can see how Lizzie missed it, but I think once she gets his deadpan delivery the two of them will get along swimmingly.
And I'm very curious to see if Jane and Bing will end up together in this adaptation. Of course it could still happen (and adaptations being adaptations, probably it will...do you think there would be fan outcry if it didn't?), but they've put together a pretty decent case for it not happening, too. Suspense! In an adaptation! I love it even as it drives me crazy.
Episode 81: It's really interesting the class issues that they've managed to weave into this series. "Lizzie, where does your family ski?" asks Gigi, confident that all people ever ski.
And Lizzie is like, "Uh, we're not really skiers..."
And then the AWKWARD sets in. AND BING SO DOESN'T GET IT OH BING. He thinks Lizzie's feeling awkward because she can't ski OH BING. (But it's sweet of him to jump in and try to help, off base though he is. What does he think went wrong between him and Jane? I am dying to know what he thinks went down.)

Date: 2013-01-23 05:28 am (UTC)The last few episodes have made me wonder if Jane and Bing are not going to end up together, too, and it would be a realistic way to translate the series in to the 21st century. Then I thought of your post about Kel/Neal: "but that's not narratively satisfying!"
I keep coming up with theories. Does Bing think Caroline gave the Bennet girls an explanation? If Caroline said to him, "Oh, don't worry, I'll explain it all to them!" And so he misunderstood Jane's subsequent messages, because he assumed she knew more than she actually does...
Or else Bing's sudden departure has something to do with him failing as a med student and he's too embarrassed to admit he had to retake an exam?

Date: 2013-01-23 05:38 am (UTC)I think if they make Lizzie & Darcy's resolution satisfying enough (and find a way to make Lydia happy again & repair her relationship with Lizzie, I could accept Jane & Bing not being together - or at least not being happily ever after yet. They could be dating, and it seems hopeful that they'll overcome their early misunderstandings, but it's not totally sure...
I like your theory that Bing thought Caroline had given the Bennet sisters an explanation that she hadn't passed on. It would explain a lot. As would "Bing failed a thing at med school!" So many possibilities...
