Ghosts of Yuletides Past
Dec. 18th, 2012 10:56 amBecause all the cool kids are doing it - Yuletide retrospective! Pondering my stories in years past! And by pondering I mean mostly crowing about how they're amazing, because apparently I am bad at modesty.
2008
My first Yuletide! I was but a sophomore in college.
The main story:
Fic: Stolen Time
Fandom: Obernewtyn Chronicles
Rating: PG-13/R
Pairing: ...Ariel/Elspeth (my recipient requested it, okay?
Warnings: consent issues like whoa. Ariel is Elspeth's nemesis.
Summary: I felt a sudden surge of-adoration? He adored me, as a child adored a rag doll. I tried to summon my own revulsion for him, for the people he had killed, the torments he'd inflicted on Rushton, but my mind was cloudy as isinglass.
The treats:
Fic: Temptation
Fandom: White Christmas
Rating: G
Pairing: Bob/Phil
Warnings: None really
Summary: The first couple nightclubs Bob had tried to get them gigs in, Bob had brought Phil along. He'd hoped the producers couldn't bring themselves to turn down that face (Bob couldn't, after all). But all they'd seen was Phil bouncing around like an overeager un-housebroken puppy. Drop the kid and come back, advised Louie at the Green Flamingo, and then blew a cloud of cigar smoke in Bob's face.
HAHA I still really like this fic. I haven't moved any of my other 2008 Yuletide fics to Archive of Our Own, but I did move this one because it is glorious and I had to share.
I wrote two other treats for Yuletide 2008, but they are both kind of dumb and I feel embarrassed about linking them. But, in the interests of completeness...
Carpe Diem, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Tibby/Lena. Notable for the line Tibby was about as straight as a slinky. I still have a vague yen to write a full-lenth Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants fic which actually deals with the relationship issues here, which would of course be entitled Straight as a Slinky.
Fools Rush In, Dexter, Deb & Laguardia. It is pretty terrible.
2009
I am still super proud of both the stories I wrote for this year.
The main story:
Fic: When It Alteration Finds
Fandom: Obernewtyn
Rating: G
Pairing: Elspeth/Dameon, Elspeth/Rushton
Warnings: None really.
Summary: Dameon loved me, and I knew that now – half drunk with cordial and sunshine – I could love him back; but when we went back into Obernewtyn, I would see Rushton in the gray stone walls and in the view of the mountains through the diamond pane windows, and flickering in the flames of the fire in my tower room; and even if Dameon and I were together my heart would be longing toward Rushton.
Another Obernewtyn fic. I swore after this that I would never offer Obernewtyn again, because clearly I would get assigned to it every single time, and just as clearly I would never, ever top this fic.
The treat:
Fic: Mr. Yunioshi Photographs
Fandom: Breakfast at Tiffany's
Rating: G
Pairing: None
Warnings: None really.
Summary: The life and times of Mr. Yunioshi, and why he lets Holly Golightly stay in her apartment rent-free. (Otherwise: can we make Mr. Yunioshi more of a character and less of an offensive caricature?)
I'm still terribly proud of this story, too, for different reasons. It's much more serious than most of my other stories.
2010
I wrote all the fics this year, and they were pretty much all awesome.
The main story:
Fic: Covetous
Fandom: 101 Dalmations
Rating: G
Pairing: None. Cruella kind of has an unrequited crush on Anita?
Warnings: None really. Cruella being Cruella. (No animals were harmed in the making of this fic.)
Summary: How Cruella met Anita. Anita has the loveliest hair Cruella has ever seen, and Cruella will do anything to get it.
This is not actually the fandom I matched my recipient on, but she asked for backstory about Cruella and Anita at school and the idea for this fic burst upon me like lightning from the sky. I had a lot of fun coming up with OCs.
The treats:
Fic: Sealskin
Fandom: Fairy tales. Selkies!
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Catherine/selkie.
Warnings: None.
Summary: Femslash fairytale with selkies OMG! I had not in fact read Sutcliff when I wrote this, but there is nonetheless something Sutcliffian about it.
This is the only fic I wrote because I wanted to treat the person, rather than solely because I loved the prompt. (Though I did love the prompt. This fic also hit me like lightning.) She wrote some simply amazing Hetalia stories, and this was by the way of a thank-you, although I never found a propitious time to tell her so.
Fic: Five Times Jess and Jules Kissed in Public
Fandom: Bend It Like Beckham.
Rating: PG
Pairing: Jess/Jules
Warnings: None.
Summary: Happy giddy best-friends-in-love fic! Also my most popular fic ever.
Fic: The King's Guard
Fandom: The Queen's Thief series, by Megan Whelan Turner. Everyone should read this series
Rating: PG
Pairing: Eugenides/Costis, Eugenides/Attolia
Warnings: None.
Summary: Gen, being Gen, can't just tell Costis he likes him; he has to come up with a plan.
This story still fills me with ridiculous amounts of glee when I reread it.
2011
I defaulted on my main story in 2011. It was beyond embarrassing. But I wrote three treats in a sad attempt to atone.
Fic: Thirty-Three Kisses and Counting
Fandom: The MacDonald Hall Books, Gordon Korman
Rating: G
Pairing: Bruno/Boots
Warnings: None.
Summary: Bruno pulled a wounded face. "Do I need a reason to make out with my best friend?" he asked. Bruno bet Cathy he could kiss more MacDonald Hall boys than she could. Boots is not pleased.
This is a fic with industrial levels of adorable. It's probably my favorite 2011 fic.
Fic: Troy & Abed in the Yuletide
Fandom: Community
Rating: G
Pairing: Troy/Abed
Warnings: None.
Summary: “I got behind when we were all Claymation,” Abed told Troy. His laptop clicked open, lighting his face in a bluish alien glow. “So I’m finishing my last Yuletide treat tonight.” Abed's movies about the study group have become a Yuletide fandom, and he's finishing up one last story for Troy.
I still feel a little embarrassed by this story, because it's so transparently designed to get lots and lots of readers. Not only is it in a big (for Yuletide) fandom, but it's a Yuletide meta story.
Fic: Half-Sick of Shadows
Fandom: Shadow Unit
Rating: PG
Pairing: None
Warnings: None.
Summary: Daphne visits Hafidha in Idlewood. “I always thought the Lady of Shalott got a raw deal,” Daphne says, approaching Hafidha’s cage. “Dying for love of Lancelot. Couldn’t she have left her tower and walked away from Camelot?”
2012
So far, I've finished my main story (FINALLY) and one treat, which was actually 75% finished last year - God alone knows why I didn't finish it up and post it then.
Conclusion: I need to get cracking on more treats!
ETA: And they've just posted the prompts for Yuletide! Time to fill ALL THE PROMPTS.

Date: 2012-12-18 06:50 pm (UTC)I should read King of Attolia...for some reason I never got to it. Turner almost scratches my Sutcliff itch (and is more interested in women and politics), but not quite...

Date: 2012-12-19 05:13 am (UTC)It does not, admittedly, have Sutcliffian nature porn.

Date: 2012-12-20 11:50 pm (UTC)But seriously, I would love to clone Turner, because vaguely Sutcliffian Mediterranean political fantasy is far too small a subgenre.
