I HAVE INTERNET AGAIN!!!! I did something to my walljack or possibly my ethernet cord or maybe just somehow angered the internet gods, but my internet wasn't working yesterday, and not to be dramatic about it, but it was like having a limb lobbed off.

Seriously. Apparently I am a cyborg.

But I made good use of my internet-free evening - or, anyway, used it, though I'm not sure watching The Pirates!: Band of Misfits actually counts as good use. It's like a bunch of screen-writers got drunk and hilarious and cobbled together a farcical plot, and failed to people it with characters sufficiently likable or engaging to make up for the fact that the movie was nonsense.

I like nonsense, but it does need to be nonsense with a soul.

Lizzie Bennet Diaries: WE'VE FINALLY MET DARCY!!! Or at least Darcy's suspenders. If they manage to film the entire next video without showing us his face, I may throw a temper tantrum.

I'm so curious how they're going to get these two crazy kids together, because Lizzie really, really hates Darcy, even more than Elizabeth hated him in the book, and with even better reason: is there any good reason for LBD Darcy to think that Jane's a gold digger? And Caroline knows about the videos, so couldn't she tell her brother that, no, Jane really is into you?

I left off watching when Jane and Lizzy were staying at Bing's house, so I met Caroline, but didn't get much farther than that. (Also, somehow on Tumblr I saw Darcy? The reveal is . . . predictable in a sense--I'll be interested in your take [speaking of which, still haven't had a chance to read carefully your take on Code Name Verity! Later today . . . ])

Anyway, what I was going to say was, in the book, Caroline is opposed to Jane. In LBD it's hard to tell, but I got the feeling in the two episodes I saw that maybe she was just pretending to be Lizzy's friend? And if so, wouldn't that be motivation not telling Bing that Jane is for real?

Yes, I think we're supposed to take from it that she is just pretending to be Lizzie's friend (and by extension, also pretending to be Jane's). But in the book, there's a definite financial motive - it wouldn't be good for her if her brother married Little Miss Penniless - whereas I don't think that works so much in the LBD, so she would have to be motivated by personal animosity towards Jane and/or Lizzie.

And it's hard to imagine anyone being motivated by personal animosity toward Jane.

But maybe Caroline was more angry about Lizzie's videos than she let on...?

Someone requested Caroline Lee fic for Yuletide, and I hope someone takes that up and digs into her motives more.

That was also my reaction to Pirates! I was starting to think I was the only one.

I am baffled, baffled by all the love that Pirates has gotten. I mean, yes, pirates, automatically awesome, but most of the characters are interchangeable and (with the exception of Number Two) really not very likable.

Yeah, I read something about how great it was that Darwin was in it, maybe he'd get kids into science, and I thought "But they made him a sleazy asshole!" Evidently that reviewer thought he was a loveable boffin, and must have seen a different movie. I was just not impressed....

Ugh I KNOW. And it bothered me that they made a number of snide little asides about Victoria's weight.

Yeah, there really wasn't much I liked about it. I was really sorry I paid theater prices based on all the reviews.

LOL, that's how I feel every time the internet goes down for whatever reason. We can be cyborgs together!

Let's face it: we live in a nation of cyborgs. The robotic future has arrived!

OMG, YES, DARCY. AND HIS SUSPENDERS.

Though his voice and delivery totally put me in mind of Keanu Reeves.

He's only had one line yet, though. I am clinging to the hope that given a little more space, he'll show more acting chops.

Yeah, pretty much. Although, I must admit I'm not sure KeanuReeves!Darcy would be an entirely bad thing... I mean, my main criticism of Reeves is that his acting is often awkward and stilted--but "awkward" and "stilted" are so very Darcy, so it might not be such a bad match, you know?

(Look at me, getting all meta when all I have to do is wait two days to find out, pfft.)

But why give up a change to go all meta? Life doesn't hand those to us often enough.

Also, awkward and stilted are pretty Darcy, but he has to bring off "awkward, stilted, yet nonetheless lovable," which is something of a task. Although simpler than it could be, as we're all primed to love him.

This is true. :D

True, true. And he is considerably looser and even, dare I say it, downright genial when they meet at Pemberly. And in addition to that, there's also something very passionate about him, so. Certainly more to him than just awkward stiltedness, I agree.

(Edited for redundancy, oops.)

Darcy! At first I was thinking I wouldn't mind if we didn't get to see his face yet, because it is what Darcy says and does which is important, not what he looks like. Then I realised that if we don't see his face - and the emotion in his face - it just reinforces Lizzie's portrayal of him as a robot. And as much as I love robot!Darcy, we need to see his face so we can see him as a human being.
And so he can act properly. I don't think Lizzie would have been so compelling in that latest vid if we hadn't seen her face.

I wonder if Caroline's motive in keeping Bing away from Jane is simply in wanting to keep Darcy away from Lizzie (and hence keep him for herself)?

That would make sense. Wow, that would be cold.
