What I’ve Just Finished Reading

Hana Videen’s The Wordhord: Daily Life in Old English, a charming introduction to Old English. I now wish to learn more about Old English! But this desire will have to lie dormant for a while because at this moment there simply is not time.

Also Anne Lindbergh’s The Prisoner of Pineapple Place, the sequel to The People in Pineapple Place. People focuses on a boy who stumbles on Pineapple Place, a strange little court that has been plucked out of time and now moves from city to city, while Prisoner focuses on Jeremiah, who has been the nine-year-old crybaby of Pineapple Place for fifty years.

Understandably, he’s pretty tired of being pigeonholed in that role! He’d like to make friends, not to mention move up to the fifth grade. The book is just as charming as Lindbergh’s others and has a bit more heft, although I didn’t think the ending was entirely successful, as spoilers )

What I’m Reading Now

A. T. Fitzroy’s Despised and Rejected, a novel about gays, lesbians, and pacifists which was published in England in 1918 and almost instantly repressed. I put this book off for a while because the title made me suspect it might be a lugubrious The Well of Loneliness type slog, and it may well get there eventually, but so far it isn’t. But it’s still early days… the characters are still in 1914, and World War I hasn’t even started yet.

What I Plan to Read Next

Still anxiously awaiting two interlibrary loans that I need for my Newbery project: Stephen W. Meader’s Boy with a Pack and Mabel Louise Robinson’s Runner of the Mountain Tops: The Life of Louis Agassiz. (You may recall Robinson as the author of Bright Island, which I didn’t particularly enjoy, but perhaps I’ll find her better in biographer mode.)
