Lydia & Mary
Nov. 18th, 2012 02:10 pmMuch as I love Lizzie Bennet and her cohort - and I do, I really do - the LBD plot stream that I've become most invested in is Lydia's. We basically know how Lizzie's story will play out: I'm interested to see how it's updated, but I don't have the same sense of suspense that I do about Lydia & Mary's story. Will those two crazy kids work out their friendship???? There's no parallel in the original book, so who knows?
I suspect they will - I hope they will - they need each other, in a sense. I suspect that both of them have difficulty making or keeping friends: Lydia because she's too much and probably demands more (attention, affection, excitement) from her friends than they're willing to give, and Mary because she's tense and prickly and hard to get to know, so most people won't make the effort.
But both of them also have legitimate reasons for hurt feelings: Mary is pushing Lydia away because she thinks Lydia only hangs out with her because she's convenient (which is probably a little bit true). Of course Lydia doesn't like that, and she's trying to smooth it over by pretending nothing's wrong, no big deal...when of course to Mary it is a big deal...
I'm super relieved that Mary's only been paid for tutoring Lydia since Lydia got back from running away to LA. Their friendship was real to begin with! They have a foundation to build on! Providing they can overcome the fact that they are both kind of bad at emotions, of course.
