Gesamtkunstwerk: a German word, which means 'a total work of art,' a piece that expresses its meaning through as many kinds of art as possible. It's now associated with Wagner, but Frank Lloyd Wright - who loved German things, though not as much as Japanese - played with the concept too, designing his houses down to the spoons. And the grounds, right down to specific kinds of spruces.

A few years ago, down in the valley behind Samara, the local theater put on A Midsummer Night's Dream. It's the best, the absolutely perfect place for that play: Titania's bower built up in the spruces, satyrs in sheepskin loincloths slouching around below, and the fairies hanging on swings off the trees.
