This weekend I returned to Door County, and Saturday morning I walked through the pine forest just above the shore of the lake. All of Friday night it rained, but by the morning the sun was evaporating the water out of the thick sponge of pine needles on the forest floor.
The water, soaking in the pine needles all night, distilled the scent as it evaporated. The fragrance hovered in the air so thick as to be almost sickening - dizzying certainly - decadent; in the sunlight, almost visible.
When I got back to campus Sunday afternoon, I discovered the trees had bloomed in my absence. The whole campus smells of lilacs.
