Switzerland

It's fall break so my mom visited for the weekend, and we went on a quest for cheese and sausage.

The quest ended in a little town called New Glarus, which was settled by the Swiss in the mid 1800s. Today its Swissness balanced uneasily between adorable and kitsch; as they have excellent sausage and an incredible bakery, I think I'll give them a pass for adorable.

New Glarus rather confirms my suspicious that Switzerland is a splinter of reality only tenuously temporally connected to the rest of us. Just look at the names of the town's founders: Fridolin. Jost. Hilarius. These are not earthbound names. These are the kind of names you would find in a Sarah Monette book.

Also, to U.S. citizens: go vote tomorrow. I'm not going to say I don't care who you vote for, because I do, but even if I think your candidate is obviously delusional and about as disconnected from reality as Switzerland - I hope you vote.
