My other weekend project: a bed!

I've been sleeping on a couch-futon from Walmart all fall. This was a poor life decision, so this weekend - as my father was in town to help - we went to Ikea to remedy it.

(The whole thing, mattress included, fit in the back of the car. That's my basic requirement for all furniture purchases.)

It took about two hours to put together, because there were so many screws & things, but the directions were really easy to follow - no technical writing, just simple line drawings. I was very impressed.

And now I have an actual bed! So I don't need to fold and unfold my sheets every day! Score!

poor life decision

I love this phrase. It's redolent with irony, humor, and the late twentieth, early twenty-first century.

Your new bed looks awesome. May I ask how much it cost?

The bed frame + the slats cost $150; the mattress, which is thick foam and rolls up, cost another $150.

We were originally going to get a twin bed, because they're cheaper, but they were almost all out of stock and the one we eventually found had actually been recalled because the sides had a tendency to bow out. O.o A double bed is more versatile anyway - that's how I justify the extravagance - I can use it as a guest bed when I'm a legit grown-up with a guest room.

I'm going to have to remember Ikea. We never actually got proper western-style beds as a family; we used Japanese futons (which are thinner than American-style ones), and then--well, we had a number of different stopgaps. When I look at the cost of box spring and mattresses and frames and all, it seems insane.

This is much more like it.

The foam mattresses are firmer than mattresses with the box springs etc., but if you've been sleeping on Japanese futons they'll probably feel pretty blissful.

That's my bed too! Except mine's a queen, since my mother for reasons passing understanding went whole hog when she upgraded me from a twin. I quite like it, except for the comedy of errors that is rolling/unrolling the slats on the frame and trying to keep them from sliding off.

Yeah, putting the bed frame together took like forty-five minutes...the rest of the time was the slats.
