Sorry for spamming, but I saw this and I must signal boost.

Authors Say Agents Try to 'Straighten' Gay Characters in YA.

Because it makes me so MAD.

(Also? Publishers need to get acquainted with slashfic, and then they will realize that there is a publishing sensation just WAITING to happen the moment someone puts out a book about cute boys in evening suits who punctuate their daring heists with make-out sessions. It COULD BE YOU, fair publisher! This is your bottom line calling!)

It's not a well reasoned and articulate response, but: that's bullshit.

Are they trying to pretend there aren't gay people out there? Pretty sure that's not going to make them go away.

Do they think that the controversy would be bad for sales? That's so counter-intuitive I'm not even going to bother arguing it.

I think they think that gay characters will make it harder to get an editor to buy it? But really, I think any rationale they give for this sort of thing is just a cover for their distaste.
