Whither Narnia?
Sep. 6th, 2011 05:52 pmWatched Voyage of the Dawn Treader last night. As usual the filmmakers have changed the story in ways that suggest they don't even begin to get it, but this time I can't even distract myself with Susan's and Caspian's cuteness (separately. Among my many grievances with previous films is the fact that the filmmakers felt the need to shove them together).
Most of all! Most of all! I am INFURIATED that they changed the spell that tempted Lucy. In the book it's a spell for finding out what your friends really think of you; in the movie, for becoming a beauty. Beauty! Clearly the only thing a girl ever thinks of! Clearly there's no way she could care enough what her (female) friends think of her to cast a spell to find out!
C. S. Lewis had his sexist moments. But he wrote wonderful female characters, who were brave and kind and motivated by a thousand things besides romance, and the filmmakers don't get within ten yards of that.
