Feel the Glee

I watched the last episode of Glee last night. I'm watching this show almost on time! It's so exciting! I don't think this has happened since Veronica Mars!
A few thoughts:
First, I think it's ridiculous that Will didn't go to Broadway. Yes, yes, "for the kids" blah blah blah - but you know what? I think the kids would benefit a hundred times more from seeing Will fulfill his dream, than seeing him kick it to the curb on their behalf. Finn and Quinn especially need to see that it's possible to get the hell out of Lima.
Speaking of Finn, I am so, so tired of the never-ending Rachel/Finn will-they/won't-they saga. Rachel and Finn are cute but their relationship is much too boring to devote, God help us, half of every other episode to it.
Also, I was just about ready to strangle Rachel in the finale, when she suddenly decided she didn't want Finn. We were this close to a resolution to their boring, boring plotline - and the writers panicked and made her change her mind for spurious reasons, just to keep the misery going! GAAAAAAAAH!
I like Rachel a lot, but I wish she wasn't so determinedly the center of the show; she gets so much attention in every episode that the other characters often get shortchanged. Glee would be better as a genuine ensemble, instead of an ensemble with a *STAR*.
I'm especially irritated because the Saga of Rachel and Finn meant that we didn't get to see the development of Sam & Mercedes' relationship. Do they have anything in common besides both being single while in Glee? But it could be really sweet if the writers ever show us any of it, and it will be awesome for Mercedes to get some development that doesn't involve collapsing in a puddle of tears.
I also want more Tina. *waves little Tina flag* All my favorite shows seem to have a geeky girl somewhere off to the side - Tina, Mac (in Veronica Mars), Tosh from Torchwood - who never gets the attention she deserves. Buck the trend, Glee!
You know what would be the best crossover ever? Tina & Mac & Tosh team up! And fight CRIME! Tina would be ever so slightly outclassed, though. Perhaps she could design super-awesome superhero outfits for everyone? And then she could SING at the bad guys. They wouldn't know what hit them!

I am counting on Rachel and Kurt moving to New York together after graduation and giving their big dreams a shot. Finn is, I am pretty sure, a country boy at heart, but that doesn't mean he couldn't visit them. I don't think he'll end up with Quinn, though.
I wish Tina could get a decent storyline that didn't involve being the girlfriend. She and Mercedes get the shortest shrift in that ensemble and they get the most stereotypical writing. I'm secretly pleased that Sam and Mercedes are a couple for however long that lasts; it won't, of course. But it's sweet.
I think the show needs a center character like Rachel and I don't find her annoying in general. I find her very much like a talented, ambitious teenager who wants to be liked but can't quite walk the line between expressing herself and fitting in. I'm not sure why she likes Finn, but that's the mystery of hormones, I guess.
I do not understand the clothing on that show, though. It's like "Sex and the City." No one dresses like that except tv show people. Well, Emma dresses like a normal person. The kids, though, sheesh.

Date: 2011-05-27 03:35 am (UTC)I guess I don't see why the show needs a center character; other ensemble shows, like West Wing or Criminal Minds, get on perfectly well without one, and if we spent less time on Rachel we might have time for Tina and Mercedes storylines. (Maybe Tina and Mercedes could become friends? Then we could get non-girlfriend development for them both!)
I don't find Rachel annoying - or rather, she's annoying in the way that TV characters are where they'd be tiresome to know in life, but are fun as characters. I just feel that her character is not complex enough to support the amount of story that she's given, so the writers fall back on endless boyfriend permutations.
About the clothing: I had the opposite reaction! Emma's clothes seem to me ridiculously retro, while the kids where much more regular clothes. Especially the boys (aside from Kurt), although I think it's easier to show boys' clothes because they don't wear quite as much variety as girls'. But I do own one or two of Rachel's shirts.
