Before I went to college I was really worried about having a roommate, although it’s turned out all right.
My high school friends—quite unnecessarily, given that they are all going to colleges two hundred or more miles away from mine—informed me unanimously that they would drown themselves in the Wabash rather than be my roommate.
Thanks. Thanks, guys. I realize that setting boundaries is important and all, but given the physical distance between us this is a bit like setting a boundary between Mongolia and Chile.
So I was totally convinced that my new roommate was going to hate me—would, within a term, abandon me for someone else, except I wouldn’t be able to find a replacement and therefore we would be trapped in a mutually loathsome coexistence. And if she didn’t, it would be because she was the Roommate from Hell.
Fortunately it didn’t work out like that.
So thank you, Veni. Many happy returns on your birthday. Enjoy the cookies!
