Erin Bow should have made the shooting less famous if she wanted Simon to plausibly fly under the radar. If he was part of a shooting that didn't capture much media attention (depressing we live in a country where I can write that sentence, but regardless), then I would buy that no one would recognize him for months or possibly ever. But you can't have a shooting that is SO famous that Simon's new school is holding a specific memorial JUST for that one shooting, and everyone knows all the details, and one of Simon's teachers recognizes him the first day, and yet the news doesn't get out.
It's like she's forgotten that information spreads, even in the absence of the internet. Sometimes faster in the absence of internet, in fact! The internet has been terrible for local news of all kinds.
At the end of the book the scientists are in danger of losing their funding because of getting very publicly pranked. But Simon and his buddies bonded, and that's what matters, right?
