His reasoning seems to be that higher math is like God in that it is changeless and eternal, and therefore the most comforting thing in the universe now that he can't offer Lueli the comfort of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Which, like, I can see his reasoning here, but also he IS lovably deranged.
